Mike DeBalfo was kind enough to send me a tif file for me play around with. I had seen it posted in his gallery and my mind started racing with what kind of cool effects could be done with the piece. I was also thinking, "Night, this has to be a night scene..."
Well, when I finally got to see the color version that was posted, I was kind of disappointed to see the colorist had made the picture daytime. But that got me excited, because that meant I could still do what I wanted to do and not be impacted by the published colors.
So, working here and there between pages, this is what I came up with. It may be a bit overkill with the green glow with the green of the plants, but I felt the green was more ominous versus using orange/red (hellish), but the green looks so much cooler against the blue. That, and the glow from the cracked ground adds fuel to the fire that something otherworldly not right is happening underground.
I hope the hair is cool... That is one of my weaknesses I think. I used a warm color derived from the pink of the streelights on the lower parts of the hair and the blue from the buildings/sky on the upper part, and it gives more volume to hair as well as a "reflection" from the surroundings. Never did that with hair before.
So, like to hear what you think.

When's the last time I wrote that much about a deviation? LOL
I dig this version, it has more emotional impact I think than the original. I liked the printed cover, but this really tells me more of a story and it really brings out the characters feelings. great job man.
my favorite. best version of this one ever done and a bunch of people did it and yours is the very very best...and im gonna try it and its gonna be pitiful! but im gonna try it anyway!
